- When it came time to retire, Mary Charlebois and Kevin Scanlon left Mendocino County in California searching for community and a calmer way of life. They now live fulltime on the Mediterranean island of Gozo, part of the Maltese archipelago. They are just two of the increasing numbers of Americans for whom living overseas represents not just a budgetary benefit, but also an adventure. Correspondent Seth Doane reports.

I have travelled extensively around the world building housing for people living in poverty. I would suggest living in a country as a guest for several months before making a final decision. Moving is very expensive so proceed with caution...and then ...after that ... enjoy every minute of the rest of your time on this earth ! Cheers!
We totally agree. ☺ ~Mary & Kevin
@@alindahill01 : It always sounds great ....but it is really important NOT to do anything impulsive ... weighing both the advantages and disadvantages of a move to another country -- and I know you agree! Enjoy the day!th
I have about 20 years of working life remaining and I'm already set on retiring in Europe, specifically France. I've been learning the language every day and plan to visit later this year. America is a great place to work hard, but the living cost here and other expenses like groceries, health is too high.
As a Canadian who has called the French Riviera of France home for over a decade and built a career in luxury real estate, I can confidently say that Americans have consistently been my top clients.
Life here offers an ideal balance between work and leisure. The cost of living is generally lower than in North America, and with the region’s international appeal, it’s easy to meet people from all corners of the world.
Even before the upcoming U.S. election, I was telling the agencies I collaborate with to prepare for a possible wave of American buyers-and that wave has certainly arrived.
My suggestion...visit first to find an area you like. Then rent to make sure it is where you want to be, then buy.
Keep Dreaming ✨
I’m 68 years old and for all of my life, I have heard that Social Security MAY not be there for me, even though I paid in and my employer MATCHED dollar per dollar. There are solutions. This should NOT be a crisis.
We have split our time between the UK and France and love doing both, and yes, almost entirely on our combined SS income of $3500 per month.
Congratulations!!!

When you have good public transit you don't need to drive.
Only an American would equate living in London, which was founded by the Romans, with needing to drive. 😮
In Malta, a car can be a burden. Take the bus, it is clean, safe, modern, and efficient. ☺
Im glad I speak Spanish and plan on learning another language too. I think everyone should have a backup language and place to retire outside the US
What will these retirees abroad do if the GOP succeeds in gutting Social Security? I worry that something that "secure" could be taken away from all of us.
Probably the same as if we were still in the US - Find a way. ☺
@@alindahill01 I admire your resourceful attitude and your sense of adventure. I, for one, am big on travel. I lived in Europe twice -- once as a student and later on an artist fellowship. Unlike many Americans, I believe in learning other languages. Right now I speak English, Italian and Spanish. Plus enough German to converse to buy food and merchandise in local stores.
They aren’t trying to gut SS. They love it just as much as you do.
I would gut it because it’s a Ponzi scheme but I’m not a Republican because I want a small government.
How about options for someone in their 40s? 🤔
I DONT BELIEVE IN RETIREMENT
GARBAGE NONSENSE
THE STOCK MARKET IS THE LAST THING IN THIS WORLD YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT
CMON
REALLY
If you are still of workng age, you generally need to be able to afford a house, get sponsored for a job, or to be independently wealthy. Did any of your grandparents have citizenship in a European country? There are some ancestry visa routes to get your foot in the door. I moved to Wales because I met someone from here. But, the UK is rather expensive compared to Southern Europe.
Look at Panama!
Mara, can you qualify for a digital nomad visa? Take a look at the requirements - nomad.residencymalta.gov.mt/. Best of luck. ~Mary & Kevin ☺
Look into Mexico. I'm 40 and have my meeting with the consulate next month to apply for residency. You must meet their income requirements but they aren't too high (although Panama's requirements are much lower).
Jane Pauley is a classic, never going to retire, she must ❤ her job! Would be intimidating trying to fill her shoes. Makes journalism look easy! Looks 20 yrs younger than her age!
Consider me gone
Gone to where? ☺
I am retiring to Panama in about 11 months!
What happens when trumpmusk kills social security?😮
❤✌👍
Don’t have to pay US and Foreign income taxes?
I wonder if they have grandkids. That would be tough moving away from grandchildren. 🤷🏻♀️. But I understand why they would want to move to those places.
Yes, we have older grandkids. They visit us and we visit them. Not as tough as you might think. ☺ ~Mary & Kevin
I find it hard to believe you can move to and live in Malta on a $24k annual SS check…
Be careful with gentrification and raising rents for the locals
Yes, we will, because we are locals now. Malta was gentrified centuries ago by the Knights of St John and many others. Thanks for your thoughts. ~Mary & Kevin
MORE EXPENISVE THAN YOU THINK OVERSEAS
GAS 10 A GALLON IN LONDON
Nobody except rich people could afford to retire in London. You can live on Social Security in Italy, South of France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, etc. Places where the little towns and villages need more people to move because young people have moved away.
London is not the best place, there are many other places that are inexpensive like Panama. ;)
You can live in London without a car. They have an extensive subway and train system.
@@pethearbennig72 Ouch!
You don’t need a car in London.
